Puducherry (also known as Pudicherry) is a union territory of India instituted in 1962. It was developed out of former four colonies of French India - Puducherry and Karaikal along India’s southeastern Coromandel Coast, belted by Tamil Nadu state; Yanam, along the eastern coast in the delta region of the Godavari River, belted by Andhra Pradesh state; and Mahe, lying on the western Malabar Coast, belted by Kerala state.
