Puducherry is a union territory of India, not an individual state. It is governed directly by the federal authority in New Delhi. It is headed by the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. The Lieutenant Governor is assigned by the President of India for a duration of five years. The Governor is accountable for the general administration of the territory. Only Indian citizens above 35 years of age are qualified for the position. The different types of powers of the Governor are:

  • Executive powers associated to administration, appointments and removals.
  • Legislative powers related to law-making and the state legislature.
  • Discretionary powers to be carried out according to the discretion of the Governor.

The Madras High Court is the court for Puducherry. It is a court of record and has all the powers including the authority to penalise an someone for disdain of court.

Puducherry is currently ruled by the All India N.R. Congress and BJP alliance. The All India N.R. Congress has 10 seats and BJP has 6 seats, thus taking the government's majority to 16 seats.
